Infectious Disease
Infectious diseases can be caused by viruses, parasites, fungi, or bacteria. Symptoms often begin with a fever, sore throat, and/or fatigue, but the same infectious disease may affect each member of a family differently. A middle-aged adult’s virus may resolve on its own with a few days’ rest, but the same virus may be life-threatening for a newborn, an elderly person, or a person with an immune disorder.
At Northwest Family Health Center, we treat infectious diseases in patients of all ages. This is a tremendous benefit to families, because so many infectious diseases can begin with one family member, and then affect others in the family. When an infectious disease affects your family, Northwest Family Health Center can diagnose and treat everyone in the family, from newborns to the elderly.
Infectious Disease Prevention
Because some infectious diseases may be passed from person to person, and some can be acquired through food/drink, or the environment, we make it a point to educate patients about the many things they can do to reduce their risk of contracting an infectious disease, including:
- Eat well, sleep well, and exercise to boost immunity
- Get recommended vaccinations
- Wash hands frequently, and clean surfaces more frequently when sick
- Practice safe food preparation and storage methods
- Use insect repellent, and seek medical attention for animal bites
- Stay home and take precautions to avoid transmission, and limit contact with others who are sick
Infectious Disease Diagnosis and Treatment
After reviewing your symptoms, your physician may order diagnostic tests or imaging scans to help diagnose the cause of your symptoms. Your physician will develop an appropriate treatment plan, which may include rest, fluids, home remedies, topical medications, antibiotics, antivirals, or over-the-counter medication, to ease your symptoms and help you on your way to feeling better.
